My CG/CX/CS monitor is not recognized by the ColorNavigator. What is the problem?

Often, people forget to establish the USB connection between the monitor and the PC/Mac. ColorNavigator uses the USB cable to calibrate the monitor. Please check that the USB cable is inserted correctly and is also functioning properly.

How can I connect my MacBook Pro to EIZO monitors and their DisplayPort via Thunderbolt 3/USB-C port?

This requires an appropriate cable between the Thunderbolt/USB-C interface and the DisplayPort in the monitor. We have tested the following cables can confirm their functionality.

What is Power Resolution for, and what should users bear in mind?

Power Resolution enhances contours and microstructures on the screen. This makes the image display clearer and more vivid. Games, videos, and images take on more depth and appear roomier in dimension. This is particularly effective for slightly blurred scenes as well as ones with a metallic reflection. Structures and contours can be displayed in sharper or softer focus as desired. The user can activate Power Resolution and define the extent to which it is activated using the OnScreen menu.

Note:
High-resolution one-point pixel patterns (mesh patterns), such as ones in moving images of bushes or rocks, require very high-performance graphics boards to optimally display movement. If delays arise due to lower-performance graphics boards, we recommend reducing the Power Resolution setting to 1 or switching it off entirely. Otherwise, the delays may cause annoying changes in brightness.

How can I deactivate FreeSync to use the blur reduction function?

For graphics card that support FreeSync, we recommend also using this function on the monitor. This is factory preset on the monitor. It is not technically possible to combine FreeSync and blur reduction. A lit red LED on the front of the monitor shows that it is ready to receive FreeSync signals. In order to use blur reduction, FreeSync must be deactivated on the monitor. To do so, first turn off the monitor. Press and hold the control button upwards while you press the power button for at least 2 seconds. The administrator menu appears. Under "Signal format", select "Display Port 1.2" to reduce blur reduction.
For graphics cards that do not support FreeSync, manual settings are not necessary. Readiness to receive FreeSync signals is automatically deactivated. Blur reduction is available and is all the more effective at higher refresh rates. Depending on the graphics card, 100, 120 or 144 Hz are available for selection.

What is the best way to select gamma and white balance on the monitor?

Our recommendations for ColorEdge monitors are as follows:

White balance:
In practice, it is common to align the white balance of the screen with the light box (and not with the working color space). This is usually D50, or 5000 Kelvin.
D65 is usually used for proofing in daylight or for photography in general.

Gamma:
We recommend that users select the tonal values of the monitor to approximate the working color space as closely as possible. That way, the application’s/operating system’s color management does not have to do as much work to correct the tone values for the monitor output.

Examples:
PhotoRGB, Adobe RGB, and sRGB are based on a gamma characteristic of 2.2. This means that the screen should also be calibrated to 2.2. ECI-RGB is based on a gamma of 1.8.

The L* gamut does not recognize any gamma function; instead, L is equidistant. Overall, these recommendations refer to the smallest differences in hues.
When calculating the output, color management takes into account the monitor profile that contains the set gamma. Users should select the monitor gamma in accordance with the gamut gamma in order to eliminate banding. Alternatively, users can work without gamma, only using L* for the monitor and gamut. However, the illuminance of the proof does not really recognize color management. Because of this, the screen’s white balance should be selected in accordance with the illuminance of the proof, and not in accordance with the gamut.

Our recommendations for FlexScan monitors are as follows:

How can halos be reduced and non-homogeneous black areas be improved?

For most LCD panel types, illumination of the screen is not completely equal and the brightness fluctuates slightly. This may result in the formation of halos. This is particularly noticeable in dark images at the edge of the screen. For example, as the FORIS FG2421 has an extraordinarily low black level, even minimal halos can be seen in some conditions. This effect can be reduced or even removed by adjusting the values for black level, contrast, gamma or contrast enhancer.

Are EIZO monitors compatible with all graphics boards?

In terms of ports available on the monitors: generally speaking, yes. We recommend graphics boards with DisplayPort 1.2 (60 Hz) for monitors with 4K resolution.

What is brightness stabilization for?

Balanced brightness is crucial for brilliant color reproduction. Traditional LCD monitors need one to two hours to even out their brightness. However, even then, they are still sensitive to temperature deviations. Patented electronics regulate the backlight, depending on the model. They ensure constant brightness, regardless of the operating times and temperature.

What is the ambient light sensor/EcoView sensor for?

It measures the ambient light and automatically adjusts the brightness of the monitor to ensure that the contrast is as stable as possible. The image brightness is increased in a bright environment and it is reduced in the dark. It is also possible to control the brightness manually.

Which conditions must be met to run 4K resolutions at 60 Hz?

A graphics card with display port signal version 1.2 is required to run 4K resolutions as 60 Hz.

What does "10 bit color rendering" mean?

In connection with a frame rate control (FRC) of the LCD modules, CG monitors allow for 10 bit color resolution, depending on the module. Screens can therefore display even the finest tone value gradations using a billion colors. This requires corresponding 10 bit support by the application software and graphics card.

How can I see the image in portrait format when I rotate the monitor?

The screen is rotated 90° in portrait and pivot/portrait modes. This can be very helpful for image editing or text applications. You need to have a graphics board that supports 90° image rotation to be able to use this function. This is because the image does not automatically rotate along with the screen. The graphics board drivers of renowned graphics boards already include this function, which means that no additional software from EIZO or other third-party providers is required.

What is behind the 4K transmission methods SST (Single-Stream Transport) and MST (Multi-Stream Transport)?

MST transmits two halves of an image (right and left), each 2x2K at 30 or 60 Hz. This operating system looks at the halves of the image like separate screens as long as they are not connected to a screen by a driver or accessory software. This method is obsolete in modern 4K monitors because it can process the 4K image in full via display port 1.2. This method of transmission is called SST. In this case, the full image, i.e. the full 4K resolution, is transmitted to the monitor and displayed at 60 Hz.

My 24" ColorEdge monitor is connected via HDMI, but the operating system only allows a resolution of 1920x1080 instead of 1920x1200. How do I get the full resolution?

Switch to the monitor's administrator menu. Select the signal selection option under optional settings and set the signal format to PC. Confirm the changes and the monitor will be restarted.

Is there a software solution to control my EIZO?

Yes, you can use ScreenManager Pro software. With this, EIZO monitors can be controlled via the USB interface. For devices with a FineContrast function, the software allows you to automatically assign a FineContrast mode to different programs. The software is a Windows application.

This may be a problem with the graphics card driver. Please install the latest driver for your graphics card and restart the PC with the monitor.
Older graphics cards may not be able to display this resolution. In this case, you will require a new graphics card with the matching output.

What are the benefits of the LED backlight?

Backlights with white LEDs have the same brightness as CCFL backlights yet consume half as much energy. That means extremely high energy efficiency and rapidly falling electricity costs. An added benefit: In contrast to fluorescent tubes, LEDs do not contain any toxic mercury, which is harmful to the environment.

There may be pixel errors on LCD screens. How does EIZO deal with this?

Screens have millions of pixels, which each have a surface area of less than a hundredth of a square millimeter. These elements may have defects, which are expressed by them being constantly lit or unlit. Visibility is fundamentally dependent on the surrounding area. For example, lit elements are almost invisible in a bright environment. Each LCD screen is unique in terms of pixel errors.
To give you a clear statement about what frequency of pixel errors EIZO deems tolerable, EIZO screen models are tested according to internationally recognized standards. On average the actual levels are in fact far below the tolerances across all of the devices. LCD modules that do not meet these requirements are not used at EIZO. Depending on the model, EIZO monitors have a zero pixel error guarantee for completely illuminated sub-pixels (partial pixels ISO 9241-307). Valid: six months from the purchase date.

Which graphics cards does EIZO recommend?

We cannot make a direct recommendation. The output signal should be digital and should support the maximum resolution of the monitor.

What does the USB hub do?

In connection with a USB-compatible computer, the monitor acts as a hub, to which other USB-compatible peripherals can be connected.

What does "overdrive" mean?

Pixels are precalculated using this function and purposefully accelerated by intelligent steering. In this way not only the black-white changes, but even changes of color nuances are shown very rapidly. Image changes in fast video sequences, 3D CAD animations and games therefore do not suffer from unwanted ghosting effects.

Can I operate and charge a late-2016 MacBook Pro via the USB-C interface?

How do I clean the surface of my EIZO LCD monitor?

To keep your monitor looking like new at all times and to prolong the service life of your device, we recommend cleaning it regularly. Clean the casing and LCD surface as described below:

IMPORTANT: Never use thinner, benzene, alcohol (ethanol, methanol or isopropyl alcohol), scouring agents or other strong solvents as these may damage the casing and the LCD display.

What does gamma mean?

The color tone rendering is relative to the change of the input signal level. This relationship is generally known as the gamma characteristic. In image reproduction, low gamma values result in white images and high gamma values result in high-contrast images.

When do I need a colorimeter and when do I need a spectrophotometer?

Spectrophotometers and colorimeters are able to measure light colors. They can be used equally well when combined with the EIZO ColorNavigator monitor calibration software. Spectrophotometers can also measure body colors. Further software from the measurement device manufacturer is necessary, however, to calibrate scanners, printers, and other output devices.

When do I need a DualLink signal?

How does the calibration work?

I have a wide gamut monitor that displays images in Web browsers (Internet Explorer, Firefox, and so on) in an oversaturated way. What causes this oversaturation and what is the best way to handle it?

Most Web browsers do not support color management. This means that the browsers ignore images’ color profiles. As a result, sRGB images, for example, are displayed in the monitor’s entire gamut (wide gamut). This is why the images are displayed in an oversaturated way. This also applies for image viewing software that doesn’t support color management.
The sRGB mode that is included on all EIZO monitors offsets the monitor colors in the sRGB gamut. This allows the EIZO monitor to correctly display the sRGB images in the browser/viewer by getting the monitor to correct what the browser or image viewing software ignores.

What are the benefits of EcoView Sense?

Where saving energy counts, the EcoView Sense function really comes into its own. It automatically turns the screen on or off, depending on whether the user is sitting/standing in front of the screen at that time. EcoView Sense will notice that the user has returned even before the mouse is moved or the keyboard is touched. What is the Smart Detection function for?

What does "resolution" mean?

The LCD display is comprised of a fixed number of image elements (pixels), which light up to display the contents of the screen. The image is comprised of horizontal and vertical pixels. LCDs achieve the best image quality if all pixels can be allocated data, i.e. if the resolution configured on the computer corresponds to that of the LCD display.

The image looks blurry. What can I do?

Firstly, please check the resolution of the LCD screen. Check the recommended resolution stated for the respective LCD screen. If you have set a lower resolution than recommended, this may result in blurring.

What are the benefits of the integrated calibration sensor?

An integrated calibration sensor governs the maximum color accuracy. It positions itself automatically for calibration and then conceals itself in the safety of the casing until the next measurement is taken. Each monitor is exactly coordinated using its sensor. For example, the measurement location is correlated with the middle of the image at the upper edge of the image so that the sensor takes measurements as if it were in the middle of the image. This integrated solution rules out the variability, which may arise when using external measuring devices. Even the influences of ambient light are determined when initiating the sensor and considered during calibration.

A color space has been defined, which most devices can comply with, to enable color matching between various applications and devices, such as monitors, scanners, and digital cameras. sRGB images, which are detected or issued on "sRBG devices" are limited to the full sRBG color range and no colors outside the sRBG color space. Color allocation, white point, and gamma are permanently defined.

What can I do if deep black and dark tones tend to be displayed too brightly?

If the video signal has a limited color depth in the range of 16-235 instead of 0-255, black areas of the screen may appear gray. If colors are not displayed correctly, this may be down to the so-called YUV format. This problem can be resolved by adjusting the color space.

What does "contrast" mean?

Contrast is the ratio of white to black and for monitors is normally stated as a dark room contrast from a controlled laboratory environment. Typical contrasts on printed paper are 6:1 for newspapers, 31:1 for laser printers, 49:1 for photo paper. For example, dark room contrasts cannot be achieved in the office because an extremely deep black cannot be achieved in normal ambient light – even with the screen turned off.

What is a look-up table (LUT)?

This is where the signal values are allocated to the color tone values for the output in the monitor. EIZO monitors are 16, 14, 12, or 10 bit instead of the conventional 8 bit look-up table (LUT) for precise color control. Precision work, performed by a high-performance chip developed in-house at EIZO.

What does "viewing angle" mean?

The viewing angle relates to the angle, beneath which the contrast is better than 10:1. These are normally values of 160° to 178°. These values do not provide any information about what enormous differences in contrast may result within the viewing angle. The contrasts should not change significantly for users with a perpendicular view and a slightly side-on view. It must not make a difference whether the viewer is looking at the middle of the image or the edge of the image. How much the contrast stability varies with different LCD technologies is best checked using a measurement diagram or by a direct visual comparison. The more stable the contrast in the user's viewing frustum, the better the image rendering.

How does self-calibration work?

Devices with an integrated calibration sensor are able to perform calibration without the help of the user. The computer does not even need to be switched on. When programmed once, the calibration will start at night, during the lunch break, or at other, definable times. It is easy to program using the ColorNavigator or the on-screen menu.

What does color temperature mean?

The color temperature is a benchmark for measuring the white tone and is stated in Kelvin. At high temperatures, the white tone appears slightly blue, while it has a more red tone at low temperatures.

What is 16-bit color processing for?

Precisely detailed reproduction requires precisely calculated color and tone values. These cannot be reduced or distorted by calculation errors. In particular, darker portions of images need to be taken into account, since the output values in these areas lie so close to one another. EIZO relies on the highest degree of precision to avoid tonal breaks and bandings: The company has developed microchips that calculate tone values of up to 16 bits, which corresponds to a computational accuracy of up to 1/65,000th.

Is a special display port cable required to transmit 4K at 60 Hz?

No. In general, every good display port cable is capable of transmitting 4K at 60 Hz.

Can I attach an EIZO RadiForce LCD monitor to an arm or other holding device?

EIZO RadiForce LCD monitors can generally be removed from their bases. They are equipped with four VESA-compatible drill holes to attach other holding devices on the reverse. Before they are fitted, the maximum load-bearing capacity of the mounting device should be checked.

Homogeneous luminance distribution and good color purity are key to achieving very accurate image rendering. The Digital Uniformity Equalizer (DUE) circuit takes care of this. It automatically corrects non-uniformities in terms of luminance and chrominance for all tone values across the entire image area – pixel by pixel.

What does HDCP mean?

Digital signal encryption system as copy protection for digital contents, for example for videos, music, etc. The transmission of digital contents is protected as the contents are encrypted on the transmitter's side, sent via a DVI output and once again decrypted on the recipient's side. Digital contents may not be reproduced if both the transmitter and recipient device do not support HDCP.

How do I dispose of my old monitor in an environmentally friendly manner?

Since the German Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act (ElektroG) entered into force on March 24, 2006, old electrical equipment can no longer be disposed of with the normal waste. It must be disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner and recycled. This also applies to old EIZO devices.
